AUSTRALIA

A trip to Australia is not just Kangaroos and Koalas, it's a vast territory of an ancient culture and a bunch of wonderful places. Explore all its corners!

LAND DOWN UNDER

Location

If you’re heading to Australia, you’ll know where this fascinating country is located – in the Southern Hemisphere, one of the largest countries in the same hemisphere. Australia takes in the entire homonymous continent of Australia and several islands in the Pacific and Indian Ocean (including Tasmania). It has no land borders with other countries.

Canberra

Weather

The climate varies depending on the territory. So before visiting the attractions in Australia, check out the weather for the trip duration. Remember, Australia is entirely in the Southern Hemisphere, and the seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere, with July being the coldest month of the year.

In the south, the climate is temperate and subtropical; in the southwest, it’s like in the Mediterranean, the center, desert and semi-desert.

While most Australian states have four distinct seasons, in the north, the climate is more tropical with cyclones, and there is a dry (April to November) and wet (November to April) season. Precipitation mainly occurs in Australian summers.

Australia has a large proportion of deserts and semi-deserts, which make up almost three-quarters of the country.

The main reasons are:

  • Winter (June 1 to August 31): +10, +25.
  • Spring (from September 1 to November 30): +15, +28.
  • Summer (December 1 – February 28): +20, +35.
  • Autumn (March 1 till May 31): +20, +30.

How to get

The easiest way to get to Australia is by air, direct, or a connecting flight. There are also ferries from neighboring islands to Australia.

Important: Before a trip to Australia, you should take out travel medical insurance, even if you don’t need a visa to enter Australia. The insurance cost is not high, and even with a basic policy, you should be able to get the medical care you need without problems.

Culture and art

Australia is a multicultural country that has absorbed different traditions and customs from both European and Asian countries. Indigenous people also have their language and culture, emphasizing the starry sky and astronomy.

As for architecture, you’ll find various colonial-era buildings with a British accent and modern structures. The Queenslander style of residential wooden homes on stilts was born and made famous in Australia.

Don’t assume you’ll be bored culturally during your trip to Australia. Australians give proper attention to literature, dance, theatre, film, and music.

Cuisine

Australian cuisine has notable influences from British, Mediterranean, and Asian cuisines, all thanks to several waves of immigration. Meat dishes include kangaroo, crocodile, and possum. As for the indigenous Australian cuisine, there are many spices and plants native to Australia.

We’ve traditionally introduced various Australian dishes, including vegetables, fruit, plenty of seafood, meat, poultry, eggs, wheat products, and cereals. Drinks available in Australia include tea, coffee, juices, sodas, and milk. They may also have wine or beer for dinner.

Australians enjoy outdoor barbecues with family or friends and grill food.

Being lost in Australia gives you a lovely sense of security.

The tourist season

To see many of the attractions in Australia, you can come here all year round. The principal thing is to know what type of holiday you prefer and what you want to see. In Australia’s summer, you can hit the beaches, but remember to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water. Also, remember these months can bring thunderstorms and coincide with the New Year when many people from the northern hemisphere organize a trip to Australia for a colorful celebration. Autumn in Australia is less hot, but there are gastronomic festivals and plenty of tourists. However, remember that it can get quite wet during this time.

Beach holiday

From December to February.

The northeast coast of Queensland (Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise, Palm Cove beaches) is famous. But there are plenty of great beaches elsewhere in Australia too. Just be aware of the warning signs, as dangerous animals are present, and not all beaches are suitable for swimming.

  • Diving: Diving is very well-developed and can be done at different times and places. For instance, on the Great Barrier Reef, you can dive from May to November and on the islands all year round. Australia has many excellent places to dive; see here. Many Australian companies also offer diving safaris.
  • Surfing: Surfing is very popular and can be done all year round, depending on the region. March to May would be a good time. Australia’s winter water is a little chilly, but conditions are safe. Australia’s prime surfing locations are Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia.

City holidays

Almost all year round.

Melbourne, in autumn, has many gastronomic events, and in spring, Canberra is ablaze with colorful flowers.

Natural holiday

From December to February and September to November.

You can visit some places all year round: National Pass, Knocklofty Reserve, Lord Howe Island, Larapinta Trail, Convict Trail, and Grand Canyon Trail.

Ski holidays

From June to September.

Australia’s major ski resorts include Falls Creek, Mount Buller, Perisher, Hotham, and Thredbo.

Festivals

There are a variety of festivals and celebrations, with lots of fun and colorful events. They all take place at different times. Here are some: New Year’s Day (Jan 1); Australia Day (Jan 26); Chinese New Year (Jan/Feb); Chinchilla Melon Festival (Feb); Mardi Gras (Feb); Royal Regatta (Feb); Beautiful Birth Festival (Mar); Anzac Day (Apr 25); Melbourne Food and Wine Festival (Apr/May); Tasting Australia (Jul); Melbourne Cup (Nov).

Whale waching Season

From June to November.

Viewing sites are in some states: Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and New South Wales. There are even festivals for the occasion, like the Eden Whale Festival.

Holidays with children

Australia is a friendly and child-friendly country. One of the few downsides to traveling with children is the long flight time. But if your family can cope comfortably, it’s worth the trip!

Australia offers beach breaks and water sports suitable for the entire family or many water parks like Adventure World or WhiteWater World. You can also check out exciting animals in nature parks and zoos (Taronga Zoo Sydney) that are only found on this continent, such as kangaroos, koalas, and Tasmanian devils as the fascinating aquatic life of our planet at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. And don’t forget that Australia is home to penguins (Lesser Penguin). If you want a more or less serene holiday in nature, you can visit nature parks near the major cities.

Australia’s health and catering facilities are excellent.

If you’re driving across the country to see some attractions in Australia, don’t forget to stock up on water, snacks, and entertainment for the child en route. Also, don’t forget to refuel. Also, be alert for wildlife on Australian roads in the evening and at night.

Holidays Adventures

Australia is a great place to be active. There’s not just surfing and diving; you can learn about the sport professionally. You can also go white water rafting or kayaking. And on Phillip Island, you can visit Phillip Island Cruises for whale watching.

For racing enthusiasts, there’s an Australian desert quad tour. Or, for a quieter holiday on your trip to Australia, why not check out one of the trekking routes in the local parks?
